Many of my online meditation students have asked me, “Can meditation change your life?”
Meditation has been touted as a life-changing practice. If you take a look online, you will find tons of publications and videos on Youtube that promise to change your life with meditation. They promise to make you super-successful. But they don’t work.
Oh, don’t get me wrong. Meditation itself can change your life. Just not the apps and the videos.
Let me show you how to get the most out of meditation.
Come meditate with me today!
Can Meditation Change Your Life?
Honestly, I am living proof that meditation can change your life. Before I started meditating, I was an angry guy with social anxiety. Now I a happy and confident. And it’s not just me. Millions of people say the same thing.
However, to change your life with meditation you need to meditate properly. You need to understand the fundamental aspects of meditation. You have to understand how meditating affects your thoughts, your beliefs, and your feelings; how it changes your basic psyche. Only then can you truly understand how you, as an individual, can use the thousands of different meditation techniques to create the type of success you want in your life.
Meditation is a very diverse topic.
There are thousands of different meditation techniques, and each of them has different benefits. Some cultivate happiness, some help you lose weight, and some make you more productive.
As a meditation teacher, I have seen meditation change the lives of many people. Some of them wanted successful careers, others to get in shape, and some to find love. Meditating was beneficial to all those people. So, I can say from firsthand experience that yes indeed it certainly does work. However, you have to understand the art and science of the practice if you are going to use it successfully.
Meditation is not magic. You can’t just imagine you’re going to achieve your dream life and hey presto! you get it. It doesn’t work like that.
What meditation does do is work on core elements of your psyche. You can use it to change your beliefs, your thoughts, and your emotions. By understand how your thoughts, beliefs and emotions affect your life, you can then use meditation to develop the personal characteristics that you need to achieve your life’s ambitions.
It sounds complicated, but don’t worry, I’m about to explain everything.
The Key To Changing Your Life With Meditation
If you want to change your life with meditation, you have to understand how meditation affects your thoughts, beliefs, and emotions. And then, you have to use meditation strategically.
Here’s how.
- First of all, decide what you want to get out of life and meditation. Do you want health? Maybe happiness? Perhaps success in your career? Or the perfect love-life? Write down whatever you want. After all, you can’t achieve your goals unless you have a clear idea of what they are.
- Now determine what kinds of emotions, beliefs and thoughts you would need to be the person you need to be to achieve your goal. If, for instance, you want to find love, you will want to be sociable, confident, and outgoing.
- Now determine the type of meditation that will give you those characteristics. For instance, for finding love, Loving Kindness would be huge because it makes you confident and makes you feel closer to other people.
Don’t just meditate. Choose what you want to get out of meditation, and then choose the right technique.
Example: Meditation To Change Your Love Life
Lots of people want to change their love lives and find the perfect lover. And meditation can certainly help. But how?
Returning to our guidelines above, we know that we need to determine the emotions, thoughts, and beliefs that will lead us to success.
Once we determine our ideal emotions, thoughts, and beliefs, we choose a corresponding meditation.
For love, we want to be outgoing, compassionate, confident, and probably happy too, because those are all qualities that will help us find that perfect someone.
So now we need to determine the best meditations for happiness, compassion, and confidence. So what are the best meditations for that?
Now, this is the tricky part because if you don’t know the different techniques, you won’t know how they affect you. However, you can cheat and use our search option (via the main menu) to search for any quality you want and find the corresponding meditations.
For now, I’ll simply tell you that the best meditations for confidence, happiness, and compassion are the Buddhist methods Metta and Karuna, as well as general mindfulness.
You now know which meditation techniques to use to develop the qualities you need to achieve what you want to achieve. Now you can start a daily meditation practice using that technique.
Let’s look at another example.
Example: Meditation To Change Your Work Life
Maybe you want to achieve success in your career, and you’re hoping to use meditation to help with that. How would you do it?
Returning to our guidelines above, we know that we need to decide the personal qualities that will lead us to success. So, what qualities would lead to a successful work life? Probably confidence, productivity, and creativity (these will vary based on your career, but this is one example).
So, what meditations would make us creative, productive and confident?
For creativity, we can use Open Monitoring. For confidence, we could use various methods such as mantras and perhaps visualization. And for productivity, we can use general mindfulness and methods like Samatha, which massively increase our focus.
By determining the personal qualities we need, we can then find the correct meditations for our situation. Those meditations will then give us the thoughts, beliefs, and emotions that we propel us towards our success.
What Really Matters Is This
What I really want you to take away from this article is this: There is no one all-powerful meditation that will give you an amazing life. To change your life with meditation, you need to ask yourself what personal qualities you need to achieve your goals, and then do the corresponding meditation techniques.
Any article or video that promises to change your life with one meditation is basically lying. You can’t just click your fingers and achieve your goals. You have to work on your psyche, so that you can be the person you need to be to achieve the things you want to achieve.
It’s really all about the guidelines we looked at above. It’s about realizing the emotions, thoughts, and beliefs that will propel you to success, and then doing the specific meditations that will give you those qualities.
