Best Meditation Mats (Zabuton) We Love In 2020

In this guide, I will share with you my picks of the very best meditation mats (Zabutons) in 2020.

A Zabuton is a traditional Japanese cushion that is used for sitting and meditating. They are generally quite flat and rectangular or square. Smaller ones can be used with a zaisu, which is a traditional type of chair in Japan, and a kyousoku, which is an armrest. Whenever sitting on the floor in Japan you will generally find a zabuton.

The link between these cushion and meditation is that they are often used in Zen meditation. Zen meditation, or Zazen, is usually done kneeling, and so it is best to have a mat to support the knees and prevent discomfort and injury.  They’re also used in Sumo wrestling, when the audience throws a zabuton to the loser for them to rest on.

Of course, here on THE DAILY MEDITATION, we are most interested in using a zabuton for meditating. And they provide plenty of benefits for this.

The primary reason to buy a zabuton or meditation mat is that they support the knees when you are sitting and meditating. This is imperative for a couple of reasons. First off, no one likes to get knee pain when meditating. I remember when I used to meditate on a wooden floor. I’d get “pins and needles” up my legs, which made it totally impossible to focus on meditating. Not to mention, it’s not exactly good for your joints. Then I got one of the best meditation mats or ‘zabutons” and it really helped with my knees. I no longer got pins and needles and was able to kneel comfortably, which of course is essential for a good meditation session. Plus, I really love the way it looks in my meditation space. It has that traditional oriental aesthetic, which adds atmosphere to my meditation room. I love it!

It really is worth getting on of the best meditation mats, so that your knees are supported and so that it looks great in your meditation room.

So let me show you my picks of the very best meditation mats (zabutons). Let’s take a look.

Bean Products Zafu and Zabuton Meditation Cushion SetGet It On Amazon

This is one of the best meditation cushion sets online. It comes with both the Zafu and Zabuton. For bad knees and back, it has lots of cushioning to help support you. I found this one very comfortable, and I do love the range of colour choices. There are so many options you can find one that is perfect for your home decor!

I will say that it is not a very thick zabuton, and the covers feel a little loose.  Despite those couple of drawbacks, it is still one of the best Zafu and Zabuton meditation cushion sets online.

For the price, it is better to buy this one meditation cushion set than to get both a Zafu and Zabuton separately. So if you’re looking to save a few bucks, bundle up and get this one.

Seat Of Your Soul Cushion 2020

This is an organic meditation cushion filled with buckwheat. What I like about it is that it is solidly built from excellent quality materials. There are tons of different colours to choose from too. The quality of construction makes it one of the best zabuton meditation mats for sale online.

The one slight negative is that it is not very thick, and there is limited room for the hips when you are sitting for an extended retreat. You might find that after an hour or so, your legs start to feel a little uncomfortable. For this reason, it is not the best meditation cushion for bad knees. I would recommend a different one if you have knee problems or want to sit for a very long period. However, if you tend to practice for twenty minutes to an hour, it is a great choice.

Which is your favourite?
