Feast, a food-lovers community, announced today that they have launched their new mindful eating app. It’s designed to help turn calorie counting into a more enjoyable and relaxing experience. And it’s available now on the App Store.
Feast tells us that the traditional approach to dieting is unhealthy and boring. The obsession with counting calories and losing weight by simply reducing the number of calories you eat is more of a chore than an enjoyable experience, and because it’s so boring many people struggle to get motivated.
The Feast app offers a new approach to calorie counting. Jackie Kim, CEO of Feast, says, “People should stop obsessing over calories and pay more attention to the actual foods they’re eating…When I was trying to lose weight for my wedding, I hated how the food trackers reduced foods to numbers where the goal is to eat as little as possible to come under an artificial calorie limit. I also realized how calorie counting can worsen symptoms of eating disorders. That’s why I created Feast.”
So if, like Kim, you’re sick to death of the boring old calorie counting, you might be interested in the Feast app. It works differently to most food tracking apps. Most calorie-counting apps work by asking you to enter the names of the foods you’ve eaten, and then the app calculates the number of calories and the nutritional content. Feast works by using pictures.
How The Feast Mindful Eating App Works
With the Feast mindful eating app, you take a picture of the food that you’re eating. This gives you a moment to pause before you eat, which could be enough time to reconsider whether you really want that cheeseburger. The app then records your pictures and creates a visual representation of the different foods in your diet.
One thing I love about this app is its personal style. It’s made by husband and wife Jackie Kim and Brad Yim, serial entrepreneurs. Kim is the person behind Maelove and Mavericks, the skincare brands. Brad is a software engineer. So, it seems like these two are the perfect husband and wife to develop a new app. And it shows, because this app is awesome.
What I love most about it is how simple the Feast app is to use. You basically just take pictures of your food and the app does the rest. And let’s face it, there are a lot of people who already take pictures of all their food to show on social media, so it’s really no extra work at all.
As the app develops it will learn all the different types of foods from the pictures its users upload. Yim says, “Our vision is to use machine learning to help Feast automatically identify foods so ultimately people won’t have to enter any information about what they are eating—the app will be intelligent enough to know everything based on the picture itself. Once we have food recognition in place then we can use that information to deliver personalized dietary and health recommendations.”
With the obsession of taking picture of food, and the simplicity of this app, this could very well be the next big thing.
