Did you ever notice how models have basically gone mad over meditation? Giselle Bundchen, Miranda Kerr, Joan Smalls, Rosie Huntington Whiteley… they are all mad about meditating.

Australian model Miranda Kerr is just one of the many celebrities and models who have recently started meditating (including Rosie Huntington Whitely who recently called meditation the “key to weight loss”)

Meditation s the buzz word at the moment. Forget your Prada and your Gucci, one of the hottest trends among celebrities this year is meditation. That’s partly because meditation is proven to make you sexier. And it’s partly for the other 100 benefits of meditation.

Either way, celebrities have taken to meditation like teenagers take to Justin Bieber. And one of the most beautiful of all celebrities is Miranada Kerr.

But why would Miranada Kerr want to meditate?

As we recently reveal, meditation makes you sexy. This is just one of the great benefits of meditation.

For a model, meditation is immensely important.

Meditation helps to boost the energy in your body so that there is more bounce in your step. Meditation also improve your circulation, which makes your skin look more beautiful. So even without make-up if you meditate you will have beautiful skin.

Meditation is also a very powerful way of boosting confidence. Obviously, for someone like Miranda Kerr, who has tons of people staring at her all day, it is immensely important that she be confident. Meditation gives her that boost to beat any sort of self doubt and to make her feel great when she steps out onto the catwalk.

New scientific research has pointed to the fact that meditation and mindfulness can help to eliminate food cravings and suppress appetite.

Rosie Huntington Whitely isn’t the only celebrity to advocate meditation for weight loss either.  Supermodel Gisele Bundchen has stated that meditation was the key to helping her lose weight after giving birth two months ago.

So, what exactly is mindfulness and meditation and how does it help weight loss?

The good news is that you don’t have to sit in lotus position, you don’t have to “Om” and you don’t need to wear a robe. We interviewed mindfulness and meditation specialist Jennifer Thornton to ask for her advice on weight loss and meditation.

“Meditation and mindfulness are essentially awareness,” says Thornton. “The problem is, so many people eat without being aware of what they’re putting in their mouths. When you meditate you become more aware of the way you are thinking about food, the food you are eating and the effect it is having on your body. It’s a fundamental shift in the way a person thinks about food, and for Gisele Bundchen, Rosie Huntington Whitely and many other celebrities, meditation has been the key to maintaining their healthy bodies.”

Meditation is the opposite of dieting. Diet make us think we need to eat X food at X time. Mindfulness and meditation are the opposite. With mindfulness and meditation you eat when you’re hungry. Simple, but also significantly more healthy. Meditation makes you respond to the needs of your body. Your body knows when it genuinely need to eat. Listen to it.

Thornton says the key issue with weight loss and with other health-related complications like smoking is multi-tasking. “Most of the time, when you eat something unhealthy or you have a cigarette, you don’t really think about it. You eat while you’re doing something else. Because you don’t pay attention while eating, you don’t feel satisfied with what you’ve had. You almost forget what you’ve eaten. This then leads you to want more food, even though your body doesn’t truly need it.”

So, what are the keys to losing weight with meditation and mindfulness? “Eat slowly. Be aware of every part of your food. When you eat, pay attention to the flavours, the colours, the texture. . . really appreciate the food. This makes you feel as though you’ve eaten more and also aids digestion. You also need to listen to your body, not your thoughts. Eat when you’re hungry, not when you have a craving.”

Joan Smalls has taken her meditation practice to the next level.

We’ve told you time and again that you can meditate wherever you like, whenever you like. Well, here is the proof. Joan Smalls is meditating on Lion’s Head mountain outside Cape Town, which reaches a peak of 2,195 feet.

What will amaze you more is the way in which Katherine Heigl lost weight.

You might think that Katherine Heigl went on a fad diet, given how popular Paleo and the Alkaline diet are right now. Or, being a fashion model, that it was a personal trainer who helped her lose weight.

Actually, it was a much more enlightened, spiritual method of weight loss.

“My best weight loss advice is to start every morning by saying out loud a positive mantra of your choice about your body,” Heigl tells us.

Mantras have been in use for more than 3000 years. They originated in Indian in the Hindu tradition when the texts the Rig Veda were written. These laid down many sacred mantras.

Traditional spiritual mantras work by tuning the mind to certain frequencies.

When we hum a sound we produce a certain frequency of sound. If we then meditate on that sound we change the frequency of the body and mind to that of the mantra.

Over the past 3000 years mantras have evolved. Today, when many people say “mantras” they actually mean “affirmation.”

An affirmation is different to a mantra. A weight loss affirmation is simply a statement of phrase that we recite to ourselves to create positive beliefs.

Katerhine Heigl’s weight loss mantra was this type of affirmation.

“[My mantra] is ‘I am easily, with good health, inspiration, grace and gratitude, losing weight faster than I can even imagine with harm to none’.”

You can see how Katherine Heigl has constructed her mantra. It’s a positive statement (“I am losing weight”) mixed with various positive emotions and attitudes (“inspiration”, “grace”, “gratitude”).

Interestingly, Katherine Heigl has also stated in the mantra that she is losing weight “with good health”.

At a time when numerous people have died after having weight loss balloon surgery (source: SHAPE) and others are getting weight loss grants to have other such unhealthy and costly medical procedures for weight loss, it’s reassuring to see a celebrity losing weight in an enlightened, spiritual way.

Follow these steps to create you own weight loss mantra

Grab a notebook / phone / Word and follow these steps to create your perfect weight loss mantra.

1: State your goal in a way that makes you feel positive. This is important because different people are affected by different words. For instance, for myself, “I am consciously creating a health body” works great. You might prefer, “I am stripping off the pounds fast” or “I am crushing my weight loss.” Pick something that feels good to you.

2: Choose positive attitude to load your mantra with: Katherine Heigl loaded her mantra with the attitude of gratitude and grace. What attitudes would you most like? Some good examples are “appreciation”, “inner peace” and “love”

3: Insert those attitudes into your mantra: Now you’re going to insert the attitudes into the mantra. For instance, if we pick “I am consciously creating a healthy body” as our seed mantra, and “love” and “appreciation” as our positive attitudes, we can rework our mantra. For instance, we could write “I am consciously and lovingly creating a healthy body out of appreciation for myself.” You might like to rework your mantra a few times until it feels perfect (you will know because it will feel inspiring).

4: Close your eyes and focus: Take five minutes to relax your mind.

5: Recite the mantra 108 times: Speak your mantra out loud 108 times. This will instill the mantra into your mind, creating the positive belief.

 

Using her weight loss mantra, Katherine Heigl lost 50LBS.

“By saying them out loud with love and gratitude I have found that I not only start to believe, but my body exhibits what I say and believe.”

Heigl states that weight loss mantras are more about positive intention than about magic. And she supports her mantra with basic healthy eating and exercise.

“The difference I’ve found in doing the work with a loving and positive attitude versus an anxious, frustrated and negative one is that the weight really does seem to just fall away with less struggle.”

Recent scientific research proves that our weight loss mindset is pivotal to success.

Mantras like this are a simple and affective way to create positive beliefs in the mind. Once the belief is in the mind, it motivates positive actions that lead to desired results.
