Designed for those looking to change their relationship with alcohol, Monument is an affordable, accessible, and research-based online platform and community whose mission is to empower people to get more out of life by drinking less.
Monument is a company dedicated to mindfulness. Being mindful about how a person thinks and feels, their relationship with alcohol, but most importantly, what makes someone happy inside, and how the mind, body and society work together to achieve this.
Monument connects members through a free anonymous forum, therapist-led groups and a collection of expert resources to provide the community with unwavering support and the most cutting edge information. Members seeking medical treatment are connected to a licensed physician and a specialized therapist to develop a personalized treatment plan, unique to their goals. Co-founded by seasoned entrepreneur Mike Russell, Monument’s vision is a world where a healthy relationship with alcohol is attainable and celebrated by all.
Alcohol disorder is diagnosed more and treated less than most might imagine. 15 million people have alcohol use disorder in the United States, but only 10% of these people get treatment in the current system in a given year.
Monument is working to change this through the multiple modalities and sources that they offer members, including therapist-moderated support groups. These free hour-long virtual video sessions moderated by qualified therapists allow members to hear from their peers, share and process thoughts and emotions, self-reflect, or practice accountability by simply showing up.
Popular support groups include “Preventing relapse through self-care” and “Navigating sobriety or moderation as a Black, Indigenous, or Person of Color (BIOPIC).” Monument also offers free community support through an anonymous forum, available 24/7. For members seeking professional care, Monument offers physician care, medication options and video therapy. Members are able to connect with a licensed physician and specialized therapist to personalize their treatment plan, including a therapy program to meet their goals and optional medication to help achieve them.
“I tried a few treatment options and found that a combination of therapy and medication was what worked for me. And after doing a lot of research, I found this method worked for a lot of other people, too,” says Mike Russell, co-founder and CEO of Monument.
Monument launched its inspirational virtual speaker series “Monument Live” in August. The event series covers personal stories from world-renowned actors, athletes, chefs, and reality stars speaking with members about their history with alcohol use. Last week, Emmy- and four-time James Beard Award-winning TV personality, chef, writer, teacher, and social justice advocate, Andrew Zimmern, shared with the Monument Live community how his sobriety saved his life. Upcoming guests include: Emmy Award-winning journalist and best selling author Elizabeth Vargas, who will speak on Thursday, September 24, television celebrity Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino, who will speak on Wednesday, October 21, and iconic baseball player Darryl Strawberry, who will speak on Saturday, November 19, among a cadre of other thoughtfully picked speakers.
The event series by Monument highlights the importance of community to the company. By inviting accomplished guests to share their own journeys to change their drinking, Monument Live breaks down the stigma around these conversations and gets more people the support they deserve. Monument Live topics include sharing stories, channeling time and energy into fitness, alcohol-free cocktail demos, and incorporating meditation and mindfulness through guided meditation. Guests will share tips and tools that members can integrate into their daily routines.
“I have never felt more alone than when I was struggling with alcohol,” says upcoming Live guest, Elizabeth Vargas. “I am looking forward to speaking with the Monument Community about my journey to sobriety – trust me, life can be so much better!”
“I am ecstatic to be able to share my story of recovery, experience, strength and hope with the Monument community! I strive to help others lead their life with integrity, peace and purpose and ensure them they are not alone,” says “The Situation. “Guiding others on their road to recovery is my life mission and passion.
