Probably The Best Sleep / Meditation App, But There’s A Better Way

There is a new sleep and meditation app on the market that is recommended by doctors. It’s called Relax Melodies and it’s promising to help even the worst insomniacs get to sleep at night.

Meditation is current being touted as one of the best natural ways to get to sleep at night. And many of the best meditation apps offer guided meditations specifically to do when you want to drift off to dreamland.

The number of people with sleep problems is rising. 70% of adults report that they have at least one night a month in which they get insufficient sleep, according to SleepHealth. Lack of sleep causes myriad health problems, ranging from depression to cognitive impairment. Unfortunately, because we are bombarded by information overload, from computers, cell phones, the media and ads, it is becoming increasingly difficult to enter the restful state of mind that is necessary for dozing.

It seems a little bit ironic that it is yet another app and yet another screen that is offering the solution to insomnia. Computers and phones cause insomnia, according to PsychCentral, but could they also cure the problem? Relax Melodies thinks so.

Relax Melodies is a smartphone app for sleep and meditation. It’s basically a sound generator that uses various tools to help you get to sleep at night. It’s available for a one-year subscription of $29.99.

The app allows you to create a soundscape. You choose a relaxing sound, add a picture (such as a forest) and hey presto you’re dreamtime soundscape is up and running. There’s more than 100 ambient sounds to choose from and a white noise option too. The app also has guided meditations that are designed to help your brain generate the alpha and theta waves that promote sleep. There’s even bedtime storied that are narrated by soft and soothing voices to help you drift off.

The team behind Relax Melodies states that their ASMR sounds (autonomous sensory meridian response) are backed by scientific research and are proven to promote the quiet restfulness we need in order to nod off. They also have numerous doctors and neuropsychologists backing the app.

Relaxing Melodies is becoming one of the most popular apps for sleep and meditation. It has over 100,000 reviews with a 4.8 star rating.

Sounds good. But do you really need an app to get to sleep? In my experience there are better alternatives. Certain sound healing instruments have been proven to help with sleep, for instance. And there are traditional meditations to do before bed that help too. And neither of those require being on a phone or paying a subscription.

If you’re looking for the best sleep and meditation app, then Relaxing Melodies might be precisely that. However, I still recommend the more natural and healthy way: Meditating in the traditional sense, away from a cellphone.
