The World’s first yoga university outside India will open in LA later this year. The yoga university will open its doors for the first year of its post graduate course later in 2020. The university will focus on yoga as well as meditation and other Eastern heath practices. And if you’re interested in going, admission will be beginning in April.

Its called the Vivekananda Yoga University (VAYU) and is based in Los Angeles. Sree Sreenath, a professor at Case Western University, has been named first president. HR Nagenadra, an Indian yoga guru, will be chairman.

In an official statement, the university said, “The programmes would roll out from August 2020, for which the admissions will be starting from April 2020 for the Master’s programme in yoga under the leadership of Sree Sreenath as the founding President.”

This news comes at a time when courses in yoga and mindfulness are on the rise. There are numerous universities around the world that offer courses in mindfulness, yoga and Ayurveda. However, the Vivekananda Yoga University in LA will be the first pure-yoga university.

Nagendra, a former scientist from NASA and the brainchild of VAYU, tells THE DAILY MEDITATION, “As Swami Vivekananda said education is the manifestation of perfection already in man, VAYU aims at providing man-making and nation-building education by promoting an all-round personality development in students of generation next.”

The rise in yoga teachers has made this the perfect time for such a university to open [READ: How To Become A Yoga Teacher]. And VAYU could well become the number one yoga-teacher-training center in the world.

Up until now, yoga teacher training courses have been limited to 200 or 500 hour classes that provides yoga teacher trainer certification. VAYU, however, will provide complete post-graduate degrees that enable students to take their education much further than what is currently offered.

There has yet to be any official word on specific meditation teacher training certifications [READ: How To Become A Meditation Teacher]. However, it seems likely that such courses would be offered, given the proximity of meditation to yoga.

This is an exciting time for anyone wanting to start teaching yoga or meditation. Not only do we have many different training courses, we now have a dedicated yoga university in the U.S.

What do you think of the vision of VAYU? And will you be attending?
